A double bass virtuoso, whose whose staggering range of techniques and boundless musical imagination have redefined the possibility of the double bass and dramatically expanded its role. Ever since he took up this instrument in 1987, he has been part of stylistically varied artistic projects involving both improvised and composed music. He has performed with Evan Parker, John Butcher, Paul Lovens, Sunny Murray, Derek Bailey, Joe McPhee, Lol Coxhill, Peter Brötzmann, Mulatu Astatke, as well as such bands as God and B-shops for the Poor. He currently collaborates with electroacoustic music composer John Wall, Spring Heel Jack, FunDaMental, as well as in bands with Louis Moholo, Charles Hayward, Harry Beckett, and others. He has appeared on more than 100 music albums.
