“To tell in music about the modern world; to take active part in debates about its directions; to present coherent and wellthought-out concert programmes, spectacles, and workshops” are some of Hashtag Ensemble’s main objectives. Founded by Ania Karpowicz in 2013, the music cooperative consists of 19 professionals, whose work is coordinated by a creative projects team. The ensemble specialises in contemporary music, improvisation, and artistic education.

Hashtag Ensemble regularly appears at new music festivals at home and abroad. It has presented several dozen concerts of both composed and improvised music, performed chamber operas, as well as releasing seven albums. Its involvement in cultural and artistic education has resulted in many dozen original projects addressed to children and teenagers, as well as masterclasses for composers and artists-performers. The cooperative regularly premieres works by both well-known and budding composers, frequently promoting the art of women artists.

In 2023 the ensemble has launched Poland’s first and only regular stage for new music presentation: Hashtag Lab (Contemporary Music Space), located in a modernist villa (Warsaw, 29 Barska St), which serves as a venue for concerts, workshops, courses for children, educational programmes, exhibitions, and so forth. Hashtag Lab is also a meeting place for artists and composers. It provides space for debates, seminars, and conferences.

For many years Hashtag Ensemble has helped to build and strengthen relations in the contemporary music scene. Hashtag members collaborate with new music ensembles from Poland and other European countries, taking part in panel discussions and community projects. One of the ensemble’s aims is to define and implement standards for the democratic management of ensembles and cultural institutions.
