Drummer/percussionist, composer and performer, video maker and multi-instrumentalist, he is involved in a highly diverse array of projects but is probably best known as a member of the trio The Necks. He studied at NSW Conservatorium of Music in Sydney, moved to Japan in 1991, and relocated to Europe in 1995. He has performed at major festivals, events, and venues throughout the world, including London Jazz Festival, Donaueschinger Musiktage, Northsea Jazz Festival (The Netherlands), Mona Foma (Tasmania), Victoriaville (Canada), Musique Action, MärzMusik, London’s Barbican Centre, New York’s BAM, Sydney Opera House, and Elbphilharmonie Hamburg. He has collaborated with Brian Eno, Ilan Volkov, David Sylvian, John Zorn, and many others. His current projects include the Environmental Studies Group (installation/music group exploring durational performance), Spill (with Magda Mayas), Das B (Mazen Kerbaj, Magda Mayas, Mike Majkowski), Glacial (with David Watson and Lee Renaldo), and Velum (with John Butcher and Magda Mayas). Thrice award winner of the Australian Recording Industry Association, five times – of the Australasian Performing Right Association, including the Distinguished Services to Australian Music Award (2019); recipient of numerous grants for composition/recording from The Australia Council for the Arts. He was an artist-in-residence at Villa Aurora, Los Angeles (2015) and Montalvo Arts (2018/19). In 2018 he won the German Arbeitsstipendium für Neue Musik und Klangkunst, awarded by the Senatsverwaltung für Kultur und Europa.
