BUI stands for Promoting Utrecht Improvisation. The BUI Foundation is both a makers’ ensemble and a group of organisers and entrepreneurs committed to adventurous music and art in Utrecht; all from a great need to celebrate the NOW. The members of BUI found each other at the Utrecht Conservatorium during the Musician 3.0 course and soon found a common denominator: BUI is looking for a different perspective: a little less in tune with the ever-accelerating pace of the 21st century, but at our own pace in search of connection, wonder, and new creativity. For us, improvisation is the ultimate tool for this.
As a makers’ ensemble, we improvise with each other, the space, and chance. We create musical performances in which we enter into a conversation with the place where we play: the space and its sounds become a musical co-player. A flute installation versus the whistling of birds in nature, a saxophone improvisation and dance among car park users or an endless drum roll in the sea; these are all scenes from BUI’s site-specific works.
BUI is “new maker” at Gaudeamus supported by the Performing Arts Fund. In addition, BUI receives support for this project from the Municipality of Utrecht, the KF Heindfonds, and Stichting Elise Mathilde.
