Śmigasiewicz, Mateusz
Born in 1989, he is composer, sound artist, and music teacher. He studied composition with a specialisation in multimedia under Zygmunt Krauze, and also took part in courses led by leading figures in contemporary music. He holds a PhD in Musical Arts from the Chopin University of Music, where he has been working as a lecturer in the Department of Composition and Music Theory since 2023.
His work encompasses symphonic, chamber and electroacoustic music, as well as spatial forms, and live electronic projects in which he acts as both composer and performer. At the heart of his interests lies sound as a material subject to transformation, often developed using techniques inspired by spectralism and live electronics. His artistic aim is to construct new sounds, forms and expressive gestures, whilst deepening an atmosphere of mystery and searching for the hidden meanings of sounds, which often lie in the subconscious. His works have been performed at festivals such as Warsaw Autumn, Musica Electronica Nova, the Festival of World Premieres, Ad Libitum, Warsaw Music Encounters and Musica Privata. He has cooperated notably with Sinfonia Varsovia, Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Camerata Silesia Choir, {oh!} Historical Orchestra, and Chain Ensemble.
Selected works: MAGMA 2 for amplified accordion (2017), Les Sirènes for orchestra and ambient sounds (2019–20), The ways of wood for portative organ, audio playback and video (2020), oscillating music for two Moog synthesizers and audio playback (2021), KWARC for 16 string instruments and audio playback (2023), MONOLIT, a cycle of multi-channel electronic compositions (2023), (re)calling for an ensemble of early instruments (2024), Mist for choir and electronics (2025), Territories for instrumental ensemble and electronics (2025), zone of decay for orchestra and electronics (2026).
