The piano concerto Theory of the Subject (for piano soloist and  actor, orchestra, live video, documentary film of a revolutionary  island community, quasiphilosophical text projections, ghost  ballet, composer’s speech, and embarrassing quotations from  music history) is an exploration of the possibilities of Subjectivity in today’s society of growing oligarchic authoritarianism and  the sometimes overly bureaucratic contemporary music field.  The soloist (Ellen Ugelvik) stands at the centre of a tragic struggle with “The System” (The Orchestra), our AI-robotic future (a self-playing piano), old Ideologies, outgrown New Music  Aesthetics, as well as the existential anxieties of the precarious  Performer.
