An open group assembled individually for each project as a collaboration of Radical Polish Ansambl members with other performers of traditional, classical, avant-garde, and jazz music. RPA is an attempt for traditional and avant-garde music to work together as partners. It has been conceived as a genuine alternative for the stereotypes of folk-to-classical music relations, entangled in “peasant-mania” and all kinds of ideas for “ennobling folk culture.” For RPA musicians, performances of the classical contemporary canon as well as works specially written for them (notably by Zygmunt Krauze, Cezary Duchnowski, Sławomir Kupczak, Agnieszka Stulgińska, Artur Zagajewski, Jakub Krzewiński, and Bernhard Lang) are an opportunity to test completely new formulas of collective music-making and building rapport with the audience. For the contemporary music scene, RPA is a ready-made offer of the kind of performance practice now universally in demand, based, paradoxically, on a primeval sense of rhythm, sonic and tonal sensitivity, as well as oral transmission. Founded in 2017 under the musical leadership of Maciej Filipczuk, Radical Polish Ansambl comprises, apart from its leader, five other violinists (Izabela Kozak, Łucja Siedlik, Maria Stępień, Mateusz Kowalski, and Marcin Lorenc) as well as percussionist Piotr Gwadera. They explore traditional performance techniques derived directly from village folk masters. The band has released two CDs: Tiers Monde and Devil’s Fiddle.
