Baculewski, Krzysztof
Born in 1950 in Warsaw; composer, graduate of the State High School of Music in Warsaw (1974), PhD in Humanities from the University of Warsaw (1982). He completed his studies at the Paris Conservatoire (1975–76) working with Olivier Messiaen and at the Groupe de Recherches Musicales (the so-called Pierre Schaeffer’s work experience). Since 1973 he has collaborated as a critic with the music journal Ruch Muzyczny; since 1982 he has taught at the Fryderyk Chopin Music Academy where he now heads the composition class. In 2001 he was awarded the title of professor. In 2002 he was guest professor at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz.
He has been awarded numerous prizes at composers’ competitions, and has served as a juror at many such competitions.
In 1986 the State Opera in Wrocław staged his opera Nowe Wyzwolenie (New Liberation) based on a play by Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz. Compositions by Baculewski have been performed in most European countries, as well as the US, Canada, Japan and South America. His works have appeared on over a dozen CDs; the DUX label has released five monographic albums of his works. He is also the author of four books on Polish contemporary music (two of which have also been published in English) and a number of academic, critical and journalistic publications. A selection of his essays, reviews and analytical articles entitled Half a century with a pen in my hand was published in 2023 by Chopin University Press.
Krzysztof Baculewski reconstructed Feliks Ignacy Dobrzyński’s Piano Concerto in A major op. 2 and instrumented Stanisław Moniuszko’s last opera Beata. In 2007 he received the Gloria Artis Silver Medal for Merit to Culture, and the in 2017 the Merit for Warsaw award. Since 2015 he has served as vice-president of the Polish Composers’ Union. In 2018 he won the Polish Composers’ Union Award. Since 1986, he has been a member of the repertoire committee of the Warsaw Autumn Festival.
