Ressi, Christof
Austrian composer, arranger, media artist, and software developer. He studied composition and music theory, jazz composition and computer music. He currently lives in Vienna. His artistic work spans various genres including contemporary classical, jazz, experimental electronics, and media art. He produces music, sound design and video for theatre and dance productions and arranges music for all kinds of ensembles and instruments, including big bands and orchestras.
His music has been performed worldwide by renowned ensembles and musicians, including Klangforum Wien, Nadar Ensemble, Studio Dan, Black Page Orchestra, and Schallfeld Ensemble. His computer music has been presented notably at the International Computer Music Conference, New Interfaces for Musical Expression, and Linux Audio Conference. He has received numerous grants and prizes for his works. In 2020 he was one of the two prizewinners in the 8th International Johann Joseph Fux Opera Composition Competition in Graz. The awarded opera Avatara was premiered in the autumn of 2022 at the Musikprotokoll festival. In 2021 he won the prestigious Erste Bank Composition Prize. In 2023, he had a portrait concert dedicated to him at the Wien Modern festival.
Ressi collaborates closely with clarinettist Szilárd Benes, focusing on audio-visual concept improvisations with pop culture references and computer game elements. The artist is currently pursuing an artistic doctorate at the Anton Bruckner Private University for Music, Theatre and Dance in Linz, researching the topic of open form in computer game environments for audio-visual artworks.
As a software developer, Ressi helps with the technical implementation of art projects and regularly contributes to open-source projects such as Pure Data and Supercollider. He publishes his own software under open-source licenses.
