Johansson Josephsson, Maria
Singer, actress, and composer, she explores various voice qualities and possibilities in both speech and song. She willingly crosses genre boundaries, using varied, both traditional and innovative techniques. Though she focuses on improvised jazz and popular music, she has also appeared in classical repertoire, in both modern and traditional operas. She also expresses herself through folk tradition and many other genres.
Senior lecturer in jazz and pop singing at the School of Music, Theatre and Art of Örebro University since 2021, she is also a song writer and composer of music for e.g. stage productions at the Kungliga Dramatiska Teatern, Stadsteatern, and Unga Klara in Stockholm. With double bassist Sébastien Dubé she has composed, arranged and performed music for an untypical duo (voice and double bass) since 2000. In2024 they both appeared at the New Year’s concert of Svenska Kammarorkestern (with which the singer has also performed many times). In the same year, the duo released on digital streaming platforms their album A Copy of You, followed in 2025 by Johansson Josephson’s two original theatre music albums, Lysistrate – Aterkomsten and Konspiration.
In 2021–23, the artist appeared in Suzanne Osten’s production Buster Keaton på månen, and in the autumn of 2024 – in a stage adaptation of Rachilde’s Monsieur Vénus (dir. Malin Axelsson). This season she again performs in Suzanne Osten’s Konspiration (Kungliga Dramatiska Teatern), a production qualified for the Swedish Biennial for Performing Arts.
