Kowalczyk, Jakub
Graduate of the Faculty of Acting and Puppetry at the Ludwik Solski State Theatre School (now the AST National Academy of Theatre Arts), Wrocław branch, he has collaborated with such theatres as Wrocław’s Polski and the Grotowski Institute, Lublin’s neTTheatre, as well as the Krzysztof Kieślowski Radio and Television Faculty (now Film School) at the University of Silesia in Katowice. He was an actor at the Opole Puppet and Actor Theatre (2015–24) and has worked at Warsaw’s Guliwer Puppet Theatre since 2024.
Since his 2013 debut he has appeared in 21 theatrical premieres and 26 performative reading spectacles. In 2016, he took part in history’s first unabridged production of Adam Mickiewicz’s Forefathers’ Eve at the Polski Theatre in Wrocław (dir. Michał Zadara). His accolades include nominations for the “Golden Mask” Artistic Award of the Marshal of Opole Province (for the part of Rollison in [ˈdʑadɨ]) and for the Opole City Prize (for cultural achievements), both in 2016, as well as an award for the most promising young puppeteer from the UNIMA Polish Puppetry Centre. He has appeared in spectacles presented and awarded at numerous festivals, including the Beijing People’s Art Theatre International Festival (Forefathers’ Eve Parts 1, 2 and 4, dir. Michał Zadara, 2015), International Puppet Theatre Festival “Katowice for Children” (The Lost Boy, dir. Paweł Passini, Grand Prix for authors and performers, 2018), Divine Comedy festival in Cracow, International Puppet Theatre Festival in Toruń (collective acting award for Zorro, dir. Paweł Aigner, 2019), and Polish Puppet Theatre Festival in Opole (1st Prize for The Lost Boy, 2019). He also contributed to Balladyna (dir. Konrad Dworakowski, 2022), awarded in the National Competition for the Production of Polish Contemporary Drama Play and the Opole Theatre Confrontations “Living Classics”.
Work with children and teenagers is an important aspect of Kowalczyk’s artistic work. He takes part in projects and workshops focusingon theatrical education of young audiences and introducing them into the theatre world, with particular emphasis on the puppet theatre as well as object puppetry.
