Krakowiak-Bałka, Katarzyna
is an artist who creates sculptures, performances, objects, compositions, and sound installations that explore the languages of architecture description. She holds a PhD from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and a habilitation from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. Her aim is to create acoustic environments in which viewers-listeners can become part of the artwork and encounter architecture through sound. Exploring architecture’s boundaries, Krakowiak-Bałka builds large-scale installations from architectural structures. Her current concerns include articulating architecture in linguistic terms—as an imperfective verb and a space of becoming, taking different forms according to the function it performs—as well as the sonic manifestations of human–nonhuman relations.
She has received numerous distinctions, including awards from St John’s College, University of Oxford, Polish Minister of Science and Higher Education, Polish Minister of Culture and National Heritage, and American Trust for Mutual Education. In 2012 she received a Special Mention for her solo exhibition Making the Walls Quake as if They Were Dilating with the Secret Knowledge of Great Powers (curator: Michał Libera) at the Polish Pavilion at the 13th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. In 2020 she created It Begins with One Word. Choose Your Own at the Barcelona Pavilion designed by Mies van der Rohe. Her 2022–23 installation Where Does Any Miracle Start?, shown at the Jeu de Paume in Paris, drew inspiration from insect sounds often inaudible to human ears, and from insects’ strange presence and resilience. From 2019 to 2022 she led the Sound Space Studio at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw; since 2022, she and Prof. Mirosław Bałka have jointly led the Interdepartmental Action Studio. She lives and works in Otwock and Oliva, Spain. She also identifies as a gardener: day by day, she attunes herself to the soil and plants, and learns from them.
