Benabdeljalil, Nabil
Born in 1979 in Rabat, he graduated from the music conservatoires in Kyiv and Moscow. He composes music in a variety of genres, with a particularly significant place in his output occupied by a cycle of piano nocturnes reflecting the diversity of his compositional styles. His work is based primarily on traditional musical genres, which he imbues with an individual character through a musical language combining North African and Southern European influences. His music focuses above all on expression and communicativeness, drawing on traditional European formal structures, often enriched with melodies rooted in Arabic vocal art.
This synthesis of diverse inspirations is especially evident in his piano works. It can be found, among other places, in the Preludes, whose titles suggest a continuation of the impressionist tradition—not exclusively French—filtered through the intense light of North Africa. The titles of his works point to the moods evoked by their musical expression. In the brief Mirage et lumière, Benabdeljalil presents his approach in its most concise, impressionistic form. Chanson sans paroles likewise reveals his particularly well-developed talent for creating mood and his ability to connect with a contemporary audience.
