Zaradny, Anna International Festival of Contemporary Music Warsaw Autumn

Born in 1977, she is a sound and visual artist, composer, instrumentalist, and cofounder of the Musica Genera festival and record  label. She graduated from the Szczecin branch of the Academy of  Music in Poznań, where she studied saxophone, conducting, and  music theory.

Her artistic practice encompasses both sound and visual art.  Drawing on her background in improvised and experimental music, she treats the instrument and other media as open,  organic forms. As a composer and instrumentalist, she works  across a broad spectrum, ranging from acoustic improvised  music informed by a minimalist contemporary idiom to structurally complex, entirely electronic experimental compositions. Her work includes scores, performances, objects, sound compositions and installations, photography, and video. Through abstraction, sonic and architectural microobjects, light, and space, she  creates acoustic environments that invite audiences to become  part of the work itself, engaging with architecture through sound  and exploring nonverbal forms of expression through narratives  and ideas. In doing so, she challenges the primacy of the visual  image, allowing sound to function as a narrative guide to be  experienced with the whole body.

Her recent presentations include exhibitions at Foksal Gallery,  Avant-Garde Institute / Foksal Gallery Foundation, Kasia Michalski Gallery, Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, Starter Gallery,  Bunkier Sztuki, 5th Lubumbashi Biennale (Democratic Republic  of Congo), and Zachęta – National Gallery of Art. Her work has  also been presented in concerts at festivals and venues including Sonic Protest (Paris), Borderline (Athens), Musica Electronica Nova, El Nicho Aural Festival (Mexico City), Unsound  Festival (New York), Exploratory Music From Poland (London  and Tokyo), What Is Music? (Sydney and Melbourne), All Ears  (Oslo), The Knitting Factory (New York), and the Art Institute  of Chicago.

Her discography comprises solo recordings as well as collaborative projects notably with Burkhard Stangl, Christian Fennesz,  Robert Piotrowicz, Jérôme Noetinger, Tony Buck, and Kasper T.  Toeplitz.

She has also composed music for theatre productions and multimedia projects, cooperating with the Contemporary Theatre  in Szczecin, National Theatre, Nowy Theatre, Studio Theatre,  Dramatyczny Theatre in Warsaw, and National Stary Theatre in  Cracow.

Together with Paulina Ołowska, she created Le group panique  with the flesh of the world, a performance and audiovisual concert  conceived as a homage to Alina Szapocznikow, commissioned by  the WIELS Contemporary Art Centre in Brussels (2012).

She has been awarded scholarships from MuseumsQuartier  (Vienna, 2005) and the Polish Minister of Culture and National  Heritage (2013). She has also been an artist-in-residence at La Muse en Circuit – Centre National de Création Musicale (with  Kasper T. Toeplitz, 2016), Elektronmusikstudion EMS Stockholm (2016), and the KSYME Contemporary Music Research  Center in Athens (2018–19). She received the Audience Award in  the 5th edition of the Views competition, Deutsche Bank Foundation Award (2011), was selected for the SHAPE platform (2017),  and received the Maria Anto and Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven  Art Prize (2023).
