Chór Nowego Teatru (Nowy Teatr Choir) International Festival of Contemporary Music Warsaw Autumn

was founded in November 2025 as a new space for collective activity centred on voice, music, and encounter. Its members include actors and staff of Nowy Teatr, as well as the theatre’s friends and neighbours – people with diverse musical backgrounds brought together by a desire to sing collectively. Interest in the project exceeded all expectations: nearly 190 people auditioned, from whom an ensemble of around 50 singers was selected.

In its very first season, the choir performed for Nowy Teatr audiences on four occasions. It organised the Open Sing-Alongs series, inviting people from outside the ensemble to join in collective singing, and developed the Voices of Nowyproject, which culminated in a concert in June 2026.

The ensemble’s repertoire includes contemporary music, with works by composers such as György Ligeti, Sven-David Sandström, Ola Gjeilo, Greg Smith, and Zuzanna Koziej. The choir also draws on traditional musical cultures, experimenting with different styles and performance techniques and juxtaposing the classical choral sound with, among others, the expressive qualities of traditional Bulgarian music and Māori singing. It also explores new relationships between the voice and sonic space. During the Voices of Nowy concert, a traditional Polish folk song was interwoven with Ignacy Zalewski’s arrangement of the song for string quartet and the sound of the choir, creating a multilayered sonic whole. The choral works were also accompanied by live soundscapes created by Grzegorz Jurczyk and Fryderyk Lutyński.

The Nowy Teatr Choir is not only a performing ensemble but also a living laboratory of the voice - a meeting place between a professional arts institution and the people who make up its immediate community. It explores the voice as an instrument, a means of communication and community-building, as well as a material of contemporary music and theatre.

In the 2026/27 season, the ensemble is developing this approach through two concert series, workshops led by Vaidas Bartušas of Operomanija, and work on recording the sound layer for a production that will enter Nowy Teatr’s repertoire the following season.

The choir’s artistic director is Joanna Maluga, assisted by conductor Diana Kuls-Ferreira, with Wojciech Idźkowski serving as choir secretary.
