Two closely related works, born out of a fascination with strikingly different faces of North American nature. Three High Places by John Luther Adams is a remembrance of his friend and fellow composer Gordon Wright, especially of time spent together in the majestic wilderness of Alaska, on the slopes of the Chugach Mountains or the rocky shores of Resurrection Bay. Also suffused with longing for a childhood paradise hidden from the world is ko’u inoa by the native Hawaiian Leilehua Lanzilotti. But this music is not only about farewell, but also about wonder and humility in front of natural beauty, hidden deep within sound and refusing to submit to the authority of any of the countless musical systems.
