Again - Alvin Singleton
A piece for chamber orchestra written in 1979 as an Austrian Radio commission and first performed in the same year during the Steirischer Herbst in Graz by the London Sinfonietta under Anthony Payne. The Musikprotokoll Composition Prize launched this work’s streak of success; its universal value has since been confirmed by performances that continue to take place in many countries despite the passage of years. Winds, brass, strings, piano and percussion live sonically in two worlds, jazz and classical, cycling through a variety of solos and ensemble textures. The piece has proved rewarding material for many an ambitious performer and conductor, including Lin Liau, Jeffrey Milarsky, Enno Poppe, Larry Strachan, and Vimbayi Kaziboni. In 2022 Ensemble Modern presented this work at Tanglewood Music Festival and in Cologne, among others.
