CHOPIN UNIVERSITY MODERN ENSEMBLE
A large chamber ensemble specialising in contemporary music, established in 2018 by the rector of the Chopin University of Music in Warsaw for day-to-day work during classes of New Music Performance Practice, where students from the composition, conducting, and instrumental departments meet and work together. The ensemble has already premiered more than thirty new works as well as performing music by Louis Andriessen, Krzysztof Baculewski, Luciano Berio, Marcin Błażewicz, Andrzej Karałow, Aleksander Kościów, Paweł Łukaszewski, Arvo Pärt, Żaneta Rydzewska, Michael Schelle, Mateusz Śmigasiewicz, Simon Steen-Andersen, Ewa Trębacz, and other composers. The ensemble regularly appears during concerts of the Chopin University’s New Music Studio and Electronic Music Studio, as well as in the series May with Multimedia. In February 2020, they made their debut in the Warsaw Philharmonic Concert Hall. In March 2022 at the New Epiphanies Festival they premiered (with contemporary music vocal sextet ProMODERN) Ignacy Zalewski’s 60-minute-long Bardo Thodol. 2020 saw the release by Chopin University Press of the ensemble’s debut album Chopin University Modern Ensemble. Debut, nominated for the 2021 Fryderyk Award in the category of Best Contemporary Music Album. The post of the ensemble’s artistic director is held by Ignacy Zalewski; his deputy is Przemysław Zych.
