Ryterski, Rafał
Composer, activist, interdisciplinary artist and event curator born in 1992 in Gdynia. The synthesis of different musical genres is a characteristic feature of his work. Ryterski himself calls this practice genre-bending. Over the past few years, he has also eagerly ventured beyond the conventions of music itself, creating interdisciplinary works at the intersection of performance and theatre. His art thematically revolves around the concept of identity, cultural phenomena specific to the LGBTQ+ community, and exposure of violence mechanisms. Ryterski’s accolades include selected work (main prize) at the 70th International Rostrum of Composers (Totentanz, 2022), winning the competition of the 33rd Music Biennale Zagreb (2025), joint main prize and audience award at PESTKA 2024 Festival of Avant-Garde Theatres and Culture (for the show Prayer Under the Miraculous Mosaic in the Parish Church of St Herself). In 2021 he was nominated for Polityka’s Passport awards in the classical music category, for “consistently introducing LGBTQ+ themes in Polish contemporary music.”
Ryterski graduated in composition (majoring in multimedia) from the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw and in classical composition from the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus. He is a lecturer on composition, sound art, and technology at the Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology in Warsaw (since 2020). His music is performed both in concert halls and clubs. He has released two albums to date (Tears Are the Diamonds of the Soul, BAS 2021, and Gaymers’ Cheatsheet, Pointless Geometry 2022). He also creates theatre music, collaborating with such directors as Kuba Kowalski, Marta Górnicka, Agnieszka Jakimiak / Mateusz Atman, Aga Błaszczak, Anna Obszańska, and Przemysław Jaszczak. His works have been presented at many music events and festivals both at home and abroad.
