STOCKHOLM SAXOPHONE QUARTET
Founded in 1969, the Quartet performs chamber music scored for traditional saxophones, but also technically advanced electroacoustic music. The Quartet members have had as many as 700 works written specifically for them to date, which confirms the ensemble’s high status in the music scene. Stockholm Saxophone Quartet collaborates closely with Swedish and foreign composers as well as students, in particular with the composition class at Stockholm’s Royal College of Music. The Quartet members thus conduct seminars and take part in concerts with artists working in other disciplines. They focus on continually testing the limits and going beyond the boundaries of what is considered possible in artistic terms.
The studios at Stora Ängby Allé in Bromma serve as the Quartet’s home, rehearsal rooms, and recording venues, but also as a meeting-point for musicians, composers, artists, choreographers, and writers. Seminars and conferences are held there alongside with workshops, discussion evenings, and small-scale concerts.
The Quartet members have toured extensively worldwide, including the Baltic countries, Albania, Bolivia, China, Egypt, France, Greece, Hungary, Iran, Israel, Japan, Mongolia, Russia, Romania, Spain, South Africa, Turkey, Ukraine, and the United States, with frequent appearances at international festivals.
Since 2016, Stockholm Saxophone Quartet has held the weeklong Svensk Musikvår festival of Swedish contemporary music in Stockholm – a unique yearly manifesto of new music, supported by Sweden’s most important cultural institutions.
