A Polish-Japanese set-and-costume designer working for drama theatres, the opera and ballet, she studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and at Warsaw’s Academy of Fine Arts. Later, as assistant designer to Boris Kudlička in 2012–16, she co-designed such productions as Belá Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle, Richard Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, Richard Strauss’s Salome, Thomas Adés’s Powder Her Face (dir. Mariusz Treliński), Richard Strauss’s Elektra (dir. Keith Warner), Vincenzo Bellini’s Norma (dir. Tomo Sugao), and others, many of which have later been staged internationally, including at New York’s Metropolitan Opera, Brussels’ La Monnaie, Prague’s Statní Opera, and San Francisco Opera. Her first independent project was Tennessee Williams’s Baby Doll (dir. Barbara Wiśniewska, Warsaw Studio Theatre, 2015). She continues to design visual spaces and costumes. Recent highlights include Krzysztof Penderecki’s children’s opera The Bravest Knight (dir. Tomasz Cyz, Wrocław Opera, 2018), an open-air superproduction of Giuseppe Verdi’s Nabucco (dir. Krystian Lada, Wrocław Opera, 2018), Sergei Prokofiev’s The Love for Three Oranges (dir. Radim Vizváry, Prague’s Statní Opera, 2019), Rodion Shchedrin’s Lolita (dir. Sláva Daubnerová, Saint Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre, 2020), Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Cosí fan tutte (dir. Jerzy Stuhr, Kraków Opera, 2021), and Antonio Vivaldi’s Bajazet (dir. Krystian Lada, Theater an der Wien, 2020).

Apart from designing large-scale productions, Kitamikado collaborates with outstanding artists in the field of experimental opera and dance, working for festivals as such Nuit Blanche in Brussels, Opera Rara in Cracow (Benedetto Marcello / David Lang’s Vanitas/Cassandra/Just, dir. Tomasz Cyz), Kreacje X (My Song, choreographed by Bartosz Zyśk), and the Airport Society’s production of Katarzyna Głowicka’s opera-performance Unknown, I Live with You. With Krystian Lada and Didzis Jaunzems, she received the prestigious Ring Award of the Graz International Competition for Directing, Set and Costume Design (2020).
