CHÓR TEATRU WIELKIEGO - OPERY NARODOWEJ (TEATR WIELKI - POLISH NATIONAL OPERA CHOIR)
A choir has been part of the Teatr Wielki company almost since the venue’s early beginnings, taking part in opera performances and sometimes also in drama productions. Starting from the 19th century, press reviews of Teatr Wielki’s productions abundantly praised the choir’s performances. The theatre’s reopening in 1965 after its postwar reconstruction gave a new impetus to the choir’s development. The big stage needed a powerful choir, which soon became an important asset of Warsaw’s opera performances. Since then, the choir has been led notably by Józef Bok, Zofia Urbanyi-Świrska, Henryk Wojnarowski, Lech Gorywoda, Bogdan Gola, Jan Szyrocki, Mirosław Janowski, and (since the 2024/25 season) – Łukasz Hermanowicz.
The Choir takes part in opera productions, symphonic concerts, and has its own concert schedule. It has performed under the baton of conductors such as Gabriel Chmura, Stefan Soltesz, Andriy Yurkevych, Bassem Akiki, Tadeusz Kozłowski, Patrick Fournillier, Wojciech Michniewski, Michał Klauza, Łukasz Borowicz, Lothar Koeings, and Yaroslav Shemet. At the Teatr Wielki - Polish National Opera it has appeared in productions of The Magic Flute (dir. Barrie Kosky), La Clemenza di Tito (dir. Ivo van Hove), Lohengrin (dir. Antony McDonald), Káťa Kabanová (dir. David Alden), Faust (dir. Robert Wilson), Elektra (dir. Willy Decker), La Damnation de Faust (dir. Achim Freyer), The Merchant of Venice (dir. KeithWarner), Rigoletto (dir. Gilbert Deflo), Carmen (dir. Andrzej Chyra), Tosca (dir. Barbara Wysocka), Simon Boccanegra (dir. Agnieszka Smoczyńska), as well as nearly all the spectacles directed at Teatr Wielki by David Pountney (The Haunted Manor, The Black Mask, The Passenger, King Roger) and Mariusz Treliński (Madama Butterfly, La Bohème, La Traviata, The Fiery Angel, Peter Grimes, Turandot, Andrea Chénier, The Flying Dutchman, Eugene Onegin, Billy Budd, La forza del destino, Halka, and others). The chorus has also toured with Teatr Wielki productions, appearing in Europe’s major musical venues (in France, Germany, Great Britain, and Luxembourg, among others), as well as in China, Japan, and the Middle East (Dubai, Oman). The choir has also appeared in world premiere performances of operas such as Paweł Szymański’s Qudsja Zaher (2013, dir. Eimuntas Nekrošius), Eugeniusz Knapik’s Moby Dick (2014, dir. Barbara Wysocka), and Krzysztof Meyer’s Dead End (2024, dir. Marek Weiss).
