The Experimentalstudio considers itself as gateway between compositional idea and technical realisation. Several composers and musicians are therefore invited every year as artists-in-residence in order to shape their works in creative discourse with specialised equipment and the Experimentalstudio consisting of music information scientists, sound designers, sound engineers, and sound directors.

Apart from creating new works together with the composers, the Experimentalstudio also performs as an ensemble and is regularly invited worldwide. After 50 years of presence in the international new music business it has established itself as leading ensemble for performing ambitious compositions with live electronics. The ensemble regularly gives concerts at almost all the major festivals (such as the Berliner Festwochen, Wiener Festwochen, Salzburger Festspiele, Festival d’Automne à Paris, Biennale di Venezia) as well as in leading musictheatres (e.g. Milan’s Teatro alla Scala, New York’s Carnegie Hall, Brussels’ Théâtre de la Monnaie, and Madrid’s Teatro Real).

Outstanding compositions have been created at the Experimentalstudio by leading composers such as Pierre Boulez, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Luigi Nono. Nono produced almost all his late works in close collaboration with the studio and its team. Since its first performance in1984, his Prometeo. Tragedia dell’ascolto has been presented by the Experimentalstudio more than ninety times.

Another generation of composers represented by such names as Mark Andre, Chaya Czernowin, José María Sánchez-Verdú, and Georg Friedrich Haas, has also created highly successful forward-looking pieces in collaboration with the Experimentalstudio.

Other outstanding music figures who have had a long-term relationship with the Experimentalstudio include Maurizio Pollini, Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, Gidon Kremer, Carolin and Jörg Widmann, Irvin Arditti, and Roberto Fabbriciani.

For its achievements, the Experimentalstudio has won several international prizes, recently – the Jahrespreis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik for a CD of works by Luigi Nono.

Following Hans-Peter Haller, André Richard, and Detlef Heusinger, Joachim Haas has been the director of the studio since 2022.
