floating:disappearance (ver. b for sinfonietta) - Paweł Malinowski

Writing in Polityka about this year’s Berlinale, Janusz Wróblewski noted that today, many artists respond to reality by “escaping into fairy tales. ”While working on this piece, I imagined myself diving deep into a huge swimming pool and listening to the strange sounds coming from below. The words of Zuzanna Gińczanka also came back to me: “Apart from myself, I know no other distance.” I hope that together, we will find peace in these sounds, and perhaps for some of us it will be a moment of temporary escape from everyday life.

Originally the work was commissioned by the Cracow International Festival of Composers and was co-financed by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage as part of the Compositional Commissions programme, implemented by the National Institute of Music and Dance. The B version presented today was written for the London Sinfonietta and today’s performance.
