Krajeczka / Краєчка
A children’s traditional-singing ensemble, Krajeczka came together spontaneously in 2021 during preparations for the tenth anniversary of the Przemyśl-based ensemble Krajka. Initially, it consisted of the very young children of Krajka’s singers; other children soon joined, however, and Krajeczka became a regularly active ensemble. From the outset, the children have worked with Tatiana Czarna-Nakonieczna, a folklorist and community arts practitioner, recipient of a scholarship awarded by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, and holder of the Gloria Artis Bronze Medal for Merit to Culture.
Several months after the ensemble was formed, a full-scale war began in Ukraine, changing the course of Krajeczka’s history. Children who had found safety in Przemyśl joined the group. At that time, the ensemble also began working with a second tutor, the experienced Kyiv choral conductor Ivanka Danylejko, who is responsible for the children’s vocal and technical preparation. Tatiana Czarna-Nakonieczna selects the repertoire.
In 2022, Krajeczka was invited to cooperate on a project with Polish Radio. The result was the double album Krajeczka: Songs, Games and Play for Children. The children were joined by outstanding traditional musicians from Poland and Ukraine, as well as singers from the Krajka traditional-singing ensemble. The recordings were made at Polish Radio’s S4 Studio. Besides presenting a collection of traditional children’s songs, the album includes instrumental accompaniments for singing along at home. Since then, Krajeczka has performed at Polish Radio’s Witold Lutosławski Concert Studio in Warsaw, at festivals in Elbląg and Koszalin, and at numerous events and concerts in Przemyśl. The ensemble also took part in recording the album Muzyczna Antologia Nadsania (Nadsanie Region’s Musical Anthology), which received the Special Award in the 2024 Fonogram Źródeł competition. On the album, Krajeczka performs several songs a cappella and others with the professional traditional-music ensemble HrayBery.
The ensemble’s repertoire consists chiefly of traditional Ukrainian songs from south-eastern Poland: spring ritual songs and dances known as hahilky, comic songs, action songs, singing games, carols, and other forms of traditional children’s and ritual repertoire.
