Kompozycja muzyczna / Musical Composition - Cezary Duchnowski
The work was commissioned by the Polish Radio, an institution that for over a century has been a constant companion to all that is fleeting: the voice, sound, silence, and the memory of listening. It was composed for the Kompopolex ensemble: a group of daring young people who draw wholeheartedly on the benefits of what is current and fashionable, within the framework of an artistic endeavour that is so unfashionable and uncurrent today. In an age of accelerated consumption, short forms, clear-cut messages and instant results, music—understood as an autonomous, sophisticated world of carefully considered sonic events—seems to speak a language not entirely in tune with the rhythm of contemporary sensibilities. Its substance is at times reminiscent of a heap: an accumulation of traces, gestures, sounds and meanings which, from a distance, may appear to be a disorderly jumble of worn-out forms, yet conceals within it a treasure trove of primordial values that art ceaselessly unearths, preserves and nurtures. And perhaps it is precisely in this incongruity that its peculiar relevance lies: as a space that does not compete with a strong visual stimulus, but demands a different kind of attention: focused, patient and open to ambiguity. I dedicate this piece to Ewa Szczecińska, tireless promoter of contemporary music.
