Born in 1950 in Warsaw; composer, graduate of the State High School of Music in Warsaw (1974), PhD in Humanities from the University of Warsaw (1982). He completed his studies at the Paris Conservatoire (1975-76) working with Olivier Messiaen and at the Groupe de Recherches Musicales (the socalled Pierre Schaeffer 's work experience). Since 1973 he has collaborated as a critic with the music journal "Ruch Muzyczny"; since 1982 he has taught at the F. Chopin Music Academy (now Fryderyk Chopin University of Music), presently heading the composition class. In 2001 he was awarded the title of professor. In 2002 he was guest professor at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz. 
He has been awarded numerous prizes at composers' competitions, and has served as a juror at many such competitions. His works include vocal-instrumental, orchestral, chamber, solo and electroacoustic compositions. In 1986 the State Opera in Wrocław staged his opera Nowe Wyzwolenie (New Liberation) based on a play by Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz. Compositions by Baculewski have been performed in most European countries, as well as the US, Canada, Japan and South America. 
The composer has published a number of scholarly books, including two volumes devoted to Polish contemporary music, as well as critical reviews and journalistic texts. He is also the author of the reconstruction of Piano Concerto in A major, Op. 2 by Ignacy Feliks Dobrzyński and the instrumentation for Stanisław Moniuszko's last opera, Beata. 
In 2007 he received the Gloria Artis silver award for Services to Culture.
