Wołek, Krzysztof
Born in 1976 in Bytom; composer, improviser, author of multimedia installations. He is a passionate advocate of contemporary acoustic and electroacoustic music as well as multimedia art. He is currently an Associate Professor of Music Composition and working as a Director of Digital Composition Studies at the University of Louisville, USA. He serves on the jury of the Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition. He studied composition at the Academy of Music in Katowice and the Royal Conservatoire in the Hague. In 2007 he completed his PhD in music composition and computer music at the University of Chicago. He has received commissions notably from the Warsaw Autumn Festival, Adam Mickiewicz Institute, Polish Modern Music Festival of Premieres, Codes Festival, Chicago Center for Contemporary Composition, and SCI/ASCAP, as well as grants and scholarships from the University of Chicago, University of Louisville, and the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. His Mobile Variations were awarded at the Concours Internationaux de Musique et d’Art Sonore Électroacoustiques in Bourges (2007). His projects span a highly varied spectrum from purely acoustic, electroacoustic, improvisational, to various forms of installations and multimedia art. As a performer and improviser, Wołek has worked with many ensembles, collectives and musicians, including Tempo Reale, Sam Pluta (Wołek/Pluta Duo), Agata Zubel, and Cezary Duchnowski. His works and projects have been presented at international festivals of contemporary music and art in Europe, North America, and Asia.
