Talking metals, talking drums - Mioko Yokoyama
The theme of the piece is communication. The idea is to let musicians communicate through music. The work was composed for the Ulysses Ensemble’s percussion project. The six musicians met each other for the first time in this project, practised and travelled together. They communicated and came to understand each other by creating music. I am grateful that I can be involved in their communication process.
As in real-life communication, I have applied a variety of conversation forms: one musician introduces the topic, and the others are listening or giving responses. Sometimes everybody actively joins in the conversation.
I chose and combined instruments so as to produce subtle but varied shades of timbre. I also tried to obtain subtle echoes of the percussion instruments coming from different parts of the stage.
