Beresford, Steve
UK pianist and multi-instrumentalist, one of the most active and versatile musicians in the British improvised and experimental music scene. He has performed with Derek Bailey, London Improvisers Orchestra, Brian Eno and Gavin Bryars in Portsmouth Sinfonia, Evan Parker, John Edwards, Lol Coxhill, and the entire British scene, but also with Han Bennink and Instant Composers Pool, Eugene Chadbourne, John Zorn, Christian Marclay, and Alfred Harth in Gestalt et Jive, as well as numerous pop musicians, including The Slits, Frank Chickens, Ted Milton, and The Flying Lizards. With David Toop he was the main driving force behind London Musicians Collective. In the 1970s Beresford cofounded and edited Musics magazine, dedicated mostly to free improvisation. In the early 1980s he was a co-editor of Collusion magazine, discussing many genres from classical and film music to avant-garde and free improvisation, to pop, rap, and heavy metal. Since 2010 he has performed John Cage’s music, including Indeterminacy, with Tania Chen and comedian Stewart Lee. In 2012 he appeared with Ilan Volkov at the BBC Proms in London’s Royal Albert Hall. Recipient of the 2012 Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award, Beresford is a senior lecturer at the University of Westminster.
