double bassist, he received his Bachelor of Music from Rice University in 2015; his primary teachers have been Miriam Chong, Jordan Anderson, Tim Pitts, and Paul Ellison. He has been a fellow at Music Academy of the West, New York String Orchestra Seminar, Klangspuren Schwaz Internationale Ensemble Modern Akademie, and the Tanglewood Music Festival where in 2015 he received the Maurice Schwartz Prize. He was a prize winner at the 2011 Washington Music Educators’ Association Solo Competition.
Since 2015, Evan Hulbert has been associate principal bass of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in British Columbia, Canada. He remains a committed advocate of music education through his private studio and active membership of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra Connects school outreach program. He has performed with the Detroit and Boston Symphony Orchestras, the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra, Ensemble Modern, and the Houston-based Musiqa New Music Collective. He has been a guest soloist with the Gothenburg Symphony and the Philharmonia Orchestra. He has made guest appearances with the Été Musical de Barachois concert series and the Quadra Island Chamber Music Festival, and has also performed as a soloist and chamber musician in the Pacific Northwest and Texas.
In joining Klangforum Wien in 2023, Evan Hulbert combines a rich tradition of American orchestral double bass playing with a sharp hunger to collaborate with the foremost composers of our time.
